Example of a "Lament in Voice" - a mother's lament

Here I want to show you an actual example of  "Lament in Voice".

In this video a Tushetian woman who lives in Zemo Alvani, Tsiala Gatsiridze, is performing a "Lament in Voice" "song", accompanied with the Tushetian accordion. (After the import of accordions in the nineteenth century in Tushetian culture, it became a special Tushetian feature to accompany lamentations with the accordion).

This is a mother's lament, lamenting over her son.

The video is sourced from "Tusheti Brand" 's archival material.
The performance was recorded in 2014.

Text in Georgian:

My attempt of an English translation:

My child, where did you leave
your belongings* ?
Where did you leave your walking stick,
that was leaning against the hill-slope?

My child, I will put a bridle
on your horse,
on black saddle
and will send it to the forest and the fields

Thou fathers houses ceiling
thou fallen Bashte*
thou root demolished
thou ruined one

Thou root demolished
thou ruined one

My child, where did you leave
your belongings?
Where did you leave your walking stick,
that was leaning against the hill-slope?

* She says "Gudai Nabadi" - in Georgian that is called a shepherd's belongings. It's a compound word: "Guda" means a carrier bag for victuals, and "Nabadi" a shepherd's thick felt coat, that was used both as a coat and as a tent. "Guda-Nabadi" is often used in Georgian language as a metaphor to refer to all of the belongings, that one takes with themselves when they leave for long or for good.

* "Bashte" - Is called the first floor of a Tushetian tower. That first floor served as a livestock barn and had simultaneously the effect of heating up the upper floor, due to the livestock's heat.
